Flat-Pack Furniture Assembly: 7 Tips for IKEA & Beyond

Flat-pack furniture looks simple on the box, but a wobbly dresser or a stripped screw can turn a quick build into a frustrating afternoon. Whether it's an IKEA wardrobe or a media console from anywhere else, these tips help you get a solid result.

1. Read the whole manual first

Skim every step before you start. Knowing what's coming stops you from fixing a panel backwards three steps later.

2. Sort the hardware before you build

Lay out screws, cams, and dowels into labelled groups. Five minutes of sorting saves far more time hunting for the right bolt mid-build.

3. Build on carpet or cardboard

A soft surface protects both your floor and the furniture's finish, and keeps small parts from rolling away.

4. Don't fully tighten until it's square

Start every screw loosely, check the unit is square, then tighten in stages. Over-tightening early warps panels and strips particleboard.

5. Mind the grain and the "hidden" faces

Pre-finished panels have a front and a back. Double-check orientation before driving cam locks — they're a pain to undo.

6. Anchor tall furniture to the wall

Bookcases, dressers, and wardrobes can tip, especially around kids. Use the included anti-tip strap and fix it into a stud. This is the single most important safety step, and it's the one most people skip.

7. Know when to hand it off

For large wardrobes, multiple items, or anything that needs wall-anchoring done right, a pro gets it built and secured quickly — with the packaging hauled away. That's exactly what our furniture assembly service covers across the GTA and surrounding areas.
